Winter storms and snow melt are common causes of flooding that are often disregarded.
Heavy snowfall can lead to flooding if there is quick melting snow and the ground is still frozen. Water cannot be absorbed into frozen ground that results in runoff that can overfill waterways such as rivers, lakes, and streams. Ice jams (floating ice carried in water's current) that accumulate near river bends, mouths of tributaries, and the downstream of dams can obstruct the flow of waterways causing them to swell and overflow.
When the ice jams dislodge or melt, the surge of water that had been held back can cause flash flooding
Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts quickly, or when dams or levees break.
Damaging flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. Floods can occur within minutes or over a long period, and may last days, weeks, or longer. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters.
